At Haresfield school we firmly believe that Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and in public decision making.
The Mathematics teaching at Haresfield is geared towards enabling each pupil to develop within their capacities; not only the maths skills and understanding required for later life, but also an enthusiasm and fascination about maths itself. We have also invested in an online teaching tool and homework facility for all children. This has had a very positive impact on the attitudes towards learning in maths and the homework completed in junior classes has increased considerably.
Expectations in maths has changed over the past year and we have written a maths calculation policy to reflect the new expectations. Each year (we have called them stages) sets out what the children need to know and how we teach them. If after reading the document you have questions please come into school and we will happily talk through some of the strategies used.
Haresfield school held a very successful open afternoon with a focus on maths and how we teach Maths now. This was very well supported and many positive comments were made about our confident and informative Maths Ambassadors who showed parents what they have been learning about in class.
