Computing Curriculum Coverage

“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” John Dewey philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer.

At Haresfield school we believe in a vibrant education which prepares children for their future lives, computing is a key component of this. Our vision is to embed computing in as many learning opportunities as possible. This will provide our children with concrete experiences of when and how they can use digital media in different aspects of their lives. Through stimulating and challenging experiences children will continue to develop their love for learning and through this become confident and independent users of a range of software and hardware. In the ever-changing digital world, we aim to provide all children with not only the skills to use the technology that exists today, but the life-long thinking skills and passion to continue to develop their love for computing through secondary school and beyond. At Haresfield, we promote digital citizenship through modelling how social media should be used responsibly with a strong focus on creating a good digital footprint. A high quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through

Curriculum Intent

Computing is an integral part of our everyday life and will play an immeasurable part in our children’s futures. At Haresfield Primary school we will provide all of our children with the skills, creativity and enthusiasm to live and thrive in a world increasingly dependent on computing. As computing technology underpins today’s modern lifestyle it is essential that all pupils gain the confidence and ability that they need in this subject, to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world.

The children have many opportunities to use technology. While all the basics IT skills are covered, e.g. making a simple Word document or using Paint programs, the children’s experience soon develops and so at Haresfield, children are beginning to make web pages, create computer games and animation. As they go through the school they will explore social networking, coding and generate content for younger children as well. This ensures that the children become digitally literate so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a global, digital world.

The use of Computing also enhances and extends our children’s learning across the whole curriculum whilst contributing to motivation and the development of social skills.

We teach a curriculum that enables children to become effective users of technology who can:

  • Understand and apply the essential principles and concepts of Computer Science, including logic, algorithms and data representation;
  • Evaluate and apply information technology analytically to solve problems;
  • Communicate ideas well by utilising appliances and devices throughout all areas of the curriculum.

Internet Safety

Haresfield Primary school takes internet safety extremely seriously. We have an ESafety Policy that provides guidance for teachers and children about how to use the internet safely. Every year group participates in lessons on e-safety and children understand how to stay safe when using technology.

Implementation:

At Haresfield School, computing is taught in discreet computing lessons. The computing curriculum is delivered through our own scheme of work, based initially on the Kapow scheme of work. Every lesson in our scheme has been individually planned so that it can be effectively taught using the infrastructure we have in place at school and so that it can meet the needs of all our pupils. Our scheme has been closely referenced against the 2014 National Curriculum attainment targets in order to ensure progression and coverage. Having discreet lessons means that the children are able to develop depth in their knowledge and skills over the duration of each of their computing topics. Where appropriate, meaningful links will be made between the computing curriculum at the wider curriculum. In computing lessons the children will use either the laptops or kindles in order to access a range of apps and software. Discreet computing lessons will focus on the curriculum skills of information technology, digital literacy and computer science. Children’s progress will be assessed reflectively using the key objectives for the unit of work. Children will be given feedback and ways to improve their work verbally.

Information and communication technology and as active participants in a digital world.

We have written an overview of our Haresfield Computing curriculum which is on a 2 year rolling program. The end points and Key skills for each area of the computing curriculum are identified. Please look at the document below to find out more information.

Early Years Foundation Stage

For our very youngest learners in the foundation stage we aim to give children a broad, play-based experience of computing in a range of contexts, including outdoor play. Computing is not just about computers. Early years learning environments feature computing scenarios based on experience in the real world, such as in role play. Children gain confidence, control and language skills through opportunities to ‘paint’ on the whiteboard or drive a remote-controlled toy. Outdoor exploration is an important aspect of the EYFS.
