PE

Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong. – J F Kennedy.

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Curriculum Intent

At Haresfield C of E Primary School we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a fundamental contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. It is our intent to ensure children understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and to equip them with the tools to do so through health and well-being education. Children must understand how to take care of themselves both physically and mentally in order to be successful as adults.

We believe that participation in sporting activity is a key element of developing a school in which pupils are proud of the community in which they belong. Therefore, great emphasis is placed upon additional sporting opportunities beyond the lesson within after-school clubs, inter-school competition and festivals run in our local area.

Our broad and balanced PE curriculum is intended to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of games and other movement situations. We ensure that we provide stimulating, enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all of our pupils. Through suitably differentiated tasks, it is intended that our children, irrespective of their basic ability, will enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual potential. Our lesson planning focuses on four key strands within each lesson, technical skills, tactical skills, physical development and personal development – to develop key skills such as leadership, confidence, social and team building skills. We aim to help children to take part in many different competitive situations and that they develop teamwork, confidence and learn to win or lose with grace and sportsmanship.

Curriculum Implementation

Through lesson time, specialist coaching and our broad range of sports clubs, we support pupils in developing skilful use of the body, the ability to repeat and refine actions and to perform them with increasing control, coordination, fluency and safety. Each class will receive a minimum of 1½ hours of PE each week with additional sporting clubs run after school on most nights and during some lunch times. Staff provide the opportunity for children to take part in our class jogging club three times a week– 15 minutes seat to seat.

We also support pupils in developing an understanding of tactics alongside a strong emphasis on fairness and team spirit. They will also demonstrate a healthy attitude to competition, showing respect for individuals, teams, officials and coaches.

Our sports coach runs a sporting leaders club during the lunchtime. We aim to offer lots of children the opportunity to lead sporting activities, organise games and events and learn to lead by example.
Curriculum Impact

We promote an understanding of safe practice, and the development of a sense of responsibility towards a child’s own and others’ safety and well-being.

The children will understand that PE and sport are an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle, they will develop stamina, suppleness, strength and speed. They will be encouraged to improve and achieve to the highest levels in relation to their own abilities and potential.

We hope motivate the children to take up other sporting activities outside school, we hope to develop a love of sport and that they become lifelong participants in sport and exercise.

By emphasising leadership, we hope the children learn the importance of communication, organisation, team work, resilience, perseverance and a respect for rules.
